The College of Chemistry and Materials was founded in October 1940. It was once the Department of Chemical Engineering of the College of Engineering at National Chung Cheng University, which is one of the earliest departments of Jiangxi Normal University. Over more than 80 years of teaching practice, our college has always adhered to a student-oriented approach, taken talent cultivation as its purpose, centered on teaching and scientific research, constantly cultivating high-level talents in various fields.

The discipline of Chemistry obtained the authorization of doctoral degree in 2011, which is one of the earliest doctoral programs in chemistry in Jiangxi Province. In 2014, it was approved for postdoctoral research. The discipline of Chemistry has been ranked in the top 1% of ESI global ranking since 2013 and was ranked at 1.79‰ by the end of 2025. The college currently offers three majors of undergraduate program, i.e. Chemistry, Applied Chemistry and Materials Chemistry. In 2019, the Chemistry major was selected as a national first-class major. Besides the Chemistry, the college has a master degree program in Materials Science and Engineering and a professional master program in Chemistry Teaching. The college currently has over 150 faculty and supporting staff members, including one Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, seven national-level talents, and over 30 provincial-level talents. A number of outstanding teachers received various honors, such as National Excellent Teacher Award.

The college owns a number of high-level research and teaching platforms, including the National Engineering Research Centre for Carbohydrate Synthesis, the Key Laboratory of Fluorine and Silicon for Energy Materials and Chemistry of Ministry of Education, Jiangxi Province Key Laboratory of Porous Functional Materials, and National Demonstration Center for Experimental Chemistry Education. The college was received the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, and 18 provincial and ministerial-level scientific awards in the past five years, including five first prizes. The college has established a number of industry-academic-research centers, leading remarkable achievements in serving local and national economy.
